A Journey of Learning and Creativity
My Experience of a 10-Day Makeup Course
Makeup has always fascinated me. Whether it was watching beauty influencers on YouTube or admiring the flawless makeup looks of celebrities, I always wondered how they achieved such perfection. While I had experimented with makeup before, I never really understood the techniques behind it. So, when I got the opportunity to join a 10-day makeup course, I was beyond excited. It was a short but intense journey that changed my perspective on makeup completely.
Day 1: Introduction to Makeup
The first day started with introductions. Our instructor, a professional makeup artist, welcomed us warmly and gave us an overview of the course. She explained that makeup is not just about looking pretty; it is an art that enhances one’s natural beauty. We learned about different skin types and how important skincare is before applying makeup. I realized that without proper skincare, even the best makeup products wouldn’t give good results. Some of the recommended skincare brands were Cetaphil, The Ordinary, Neutrogena, and Clinique, which offer great cleansers and moisturizers.
Day 2: Understanding Skin and Prepping the Face
On the second day, we dived deeper into skincare. The instructor taught us about different skin types—oily, dry, combination, and sensitive—and how to choose the right products accordingly. We learned how to cleanse, tone, and moisturize the skin before applying any makeup. This step was crucial because a well-prepared face helps makeup stay longer and look smoother. For primers, we tried Smashbox Photo Finish, Maybelline Baby Skin, and MAC Prep + Prime, which help in creating a smooth base.
Day 3: Foundation and Concealer Techniques
This was one of the most exciting days because we got to work with foundation and concealer. Our instructor demonstrated how to choose the right shade based on undertones and how to blend it seamlessly for a natural finish. We practiced using different foundations like Estée Lauder Double Wear, NARS Natural Radiant Longwear, and Maybelline Fit Me, each offering different levels of coverage. For concealers, we worked with Tarte Shape Tape, L.A. Girl Pro Conceal, and MAC Studio Fix Concealer to cover blemishes and dark circles effectively.
Day 4: Eye Makeup – The Basics
Eye makeup is something I always struggled with, so I was eager to learn. We started with basic eyeshadow application, blending techniques, and how to choose colors that complement different skin tones. We used eyeshadow palettes like Morphe 35O, Huda Beauty Nude Palette, and Urban Decay Naked Palette, which offered a variety of shades for different looks.
Day 5: Eyeliner, Mascara, and Eyebrows
Applying eyeliner evenly is not as easy as it looks! The instructor showed us different styles, like winged eyeliner, smudged liner, and tightlining. Some of the best eyeliners we used were Maybelline Hyper Easy, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof, and NYX Epic Ink Liner. For mascaras, we tried L’Oréal Lash Paradise, Benefit They’re Real, and Too Faced Better Than Sex, which gave great volume and length. For brows, Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and Benefit Precisely, My Brow Pencil were highly recommended.
Day 6: Contouring and Highlighting
Contouring and highlighting were completely new to me. We learned how to sculpt the face using bronzer and contouring powders, making cheekbones look more defined. We used Fenty Beauty Match Stix, Hoola Bronzer by Benefit, and NYX Wonder Stick for contouring. For highlighters, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector, MAC Soft & Gentle, and Maybelline Master Chrome were the most loved products in class.
Day 7: Blush and Lipstick Application
On this day, we focused on blush and lipstick. The instructor explained how to choose the right blush shade according to skin tone. Some of the best blushes we worked with were NARS Orgasm, Milani Baked Blush, and Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush. For lips, we used MAC Ruby Woo, Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink, and Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk, which were perfect for different occasions.
Day 8: Full Face Makeup Look
Now that we had learned all the basics, we had to create a complete makeup look from start to finish. This meant doing everything—prepping the skin, applying foundation, concealing, contouring, and completing the eye and lip makeup. I decided to go for a soft glam look. I started with Smashbox Photo Finish Primer to ensure a smooth base, then applied NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation, which blended beautifully into my skin. For concealer, I used Tarte Shape Tape to cover my under-eye circles and highlight certain areas.
For my eyes, I chose the Huda Beauty Nude Palette, blending soft brown and champagne shades to create a natural, glowing look. A sharp winged eyeliner using NYX Epic Ink Liner added definition, and Benefit They’re Real Mascara gave my lashes a dramatic lift. For my brows, I used Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, which helped shape them perfectly.
Contouring with Hoola Bronzer defined my cheekbones, and Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush gave my face a fresh, natural flush. I added a touch of Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector highlighter on my cheekbones, nose, and cupid’s bow for a radiant glow.
To finish the look, I used Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick, which gave me a perfect natural pink lip. Seeing my reflection in the mirror after completing the look made me realize how much I had improved in just a few days.
Day 9: Special Occasion Makeup
This day was all about bold, glamorous looks suitable for weddings, parties, and photoshoots. Our instructor taught us how to work with bolder colors, shimmer, and glitter. We used products like Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette for dramatic eyes, Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint for a bold red lip, and Morphe Continuous Setting Mist to lock everything in place. I experimented with a smokey eye look using Urban Decay Naked Heat Palette and added a touch of Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow to the center of my eyelids for extra sparkle. It was fun stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something bold.
Day 10: Final Assessment and Certification
The last day was a mix of excitement and nervousness. We had to create a full makeup look on a model (one of our classmates) as our final assessment. I decided to do a dewy, fresh bridal look, using MAC Studio Fix Foundation, soft rosy tones from the Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette, and a glossy nude lip with Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb. Our instructor evaluated our blending skills, product choices, and overall technique. When she complimented my smooth foundation application and well-blended eyeshadow, I felt a huge sense of accomplishment. At the end of the day, we received our certificates, marking the successful completion of our 10-day journey.
My Takeaways from the Course
This course was an eye-opening experience for me. I learned that makeup is not about hiding imperfections but enhancing natural beauty. I also gained a deeper appreciation for professional makeup artists—their skills require patience, practice, and creativity.
Here are some of my biggest takeaways:
1. Good skincare is key – Without proper skin prep, even high-end makeup won’t sit well.
2. Blending is everything – Whether it’s foundation, eyeshadow, or contour, seamless blending makes all the difference.
3. Less is more – Sometimes, using fewer products and keeping it natural creates the most beautiful look.
4. Experimentation is important – Trying different styles and colors helps build confidence and creativity.
5. Confidence is the best makeup – No matter how great the makeup, confidence is what makes a person truly shine.
I highly recommend taking a makeup course to anyone who loves beauty, whether for professional reasons or personal skills. It’s an experience that’s both fun and rewarding. After these 10 days, I feel much more confident in my makeup abilities, and I can’t wait to keep practicing and improving!
