Diving into Minds: Why I Pursued Psychology

My Path to Psychology: A Passion for Understanding People

When I started my D.El.Ed diploma course, I had no idea that a single subject would change the course of my life. One of the subjects was Child Psychology, and at first, I didn’t think much of it. I had never studied psychology before, and I didn’t know what to expect. But as the lessons progressed, I found myself completely drawn in.

Child psychology helped me understand how a child’s mind develops, how their environment shapes their behavior, and why they act the way they do. It wasn’t just about theory—it felt real and relatable. I started looking at the world around me differently. Suddenly, I could connect the dots between what I was learning and the behaviors of children I interacted with. This newfound perspective fascinated me. Before this, I hadn’t thought much about psychology as a subject or a career. But the more I studied, the more curious I became. I found myself reading beyond the syllabus, exploring topics about the human mind, and asking questions that I had never considered before. It was as if psychology had opened a new door in my mind, and I couldn’t help but walk through it.

That’s when I made a big decision. While continuing my D.El.Ed course, I enrolled in a graduation degree in psychology. It felt like the right step to take because I wanted to dive deeper into this field. Balancing both courses wasn’t easy, but my curiosity and passion for psychology kept me going. I wanted to learn everything I could about how people think, feel, and behave.

As I progressed in my studies, I realized that psychology wasn’t just about theories or case studies—it was about people. It helped me see the world in a more empathetic and understanding way. I started noticing how much our thoughts and emotions shape our lives and how important it is to understand them.

One of the most memorable moments in this journey was during a project where I observed a child struggling with learning difficulties. Instead of just seeing the problem, psychology helped me understand the “why” behind it. That moment solidified my decision to pursue this field. I wanted to be able to help people, not just by addressing their struggles but by truly understanding them.

During my graduation, I chose to do my internship in the clinical psychology field. This experience was a turning point for me. It gave me my first real exposure to the practical side of psychology, where I observed and worked with individuals facing mental health challenges. During the internship, I spent time in hospitals and clinics, shadowing professionals and learning how to assess, diagnose, and understand various mental health conditions. I got the chance to see firsthand how psychologists interacted with patients, approached therapy, and made treatment plans. What stood out to me the most was the empathetic yet structured approach they used to help people heal and grow.

I vividly remember sitting in on sessions, watching the patience and understanding it took to build trust with clients. It wasn’t just about addressing symptoms—it was about truly connecting with people and helping them feel seen and heard. That aspect deeply resonated with me, and I realized that this was the direction I wanted to take in my career.

This exposure not only strengthened my understanding of the clinical field but also gave me clarity about my future. I knew I wanted to pursue my master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and work directly with individuals to help them navigate their mental health struggles.

The internship experience taught me how challenging yet rewarding this field is. It made me more determined to dive deeper into the complexities of the human mind and gain the skills needed to make a meaningful impact. That experience became the foundation of my decision to specialize in clinical psychology, and I feel excited to continue this journey of learning and growth.
